Applications
Pro Gear is recommended for use in front and rear differentials, manual transmissions and lower gear units of marine engines or anywhere an API GL-5 gear oil is specified.
This oil is formulated for severe-duty and high-stress applications. If your classic car’s differential or manual transmission specifically calls for an API GL-5 fluid, it is safe to use.
Material Compatibility (Yellow Metals): Many classic manual transmissions use “yellow metals” (like brass or bronze synchros). API GL-5 fluids contain high-pressure (EP) additives that can be corrosive to these metals over time. If your classic vehicle requires a GL-4 fluid to protect its synchronizers, using 250WT GL-5 is not recommended.
Viscosity (Thickness): 250WT is exceptionally thick. It is typically used in heavy-duty racing applications (like quick-change rear ends in drag racing or off-road buggies). Most classic cars and trucks require a more moderate weight, such as 75W-90, 80W-90, or SAE 90. For classic applications, consider using a standard mineral-based alternative.
Maxima Pro Gear 250WT Ester Synthetic can be used in motorcycles, but only in specific applications like shaft drives, independent transmissions, and non-wet-clutch primary chaincases. Because it is a high-viscosity, GL-5 rated gear oil, it is generally not suited for standard wet-clutch systems or engine crankcases.
